I am sure you have asked yourself this very question.During my many years in practice, this is the most frequently askedquestion. My goal is to bring enlightenment to people so that they canmake wise decisions. The media via television, newspapers, magazinesand the Internet inundates us with the latest experts opinions on whatwe should consume. We have heard about non-fat diets, low-carb diets, and high protein diets and are left wondering which expert is right. Wehave tried going on complex carbohydrate regimes or high protein diets. We have tried consuming vitamins.
The food consumed today ispretty much recreational; there is very little nutritional value thatis why vitamins have gained so much popularity. One of the reasonsnatural supplements are needed today is based on the fact that our foodno longer contains nutrients. Also due to time and convenience peopleeat on the run. This makes the need for natural supplements greater. Inmany years of practice I have found it is sometimes better to give anatural supplement and let a person continue to eat the way they areaccustomed to. I find it important to work with the individuals'lifestyle. Changing a person's way of life is sometimes far toodifficult for that person.
What we perhaps have forgotten in thesearch for health is getting back to pure whole food. That means foodgrown in rich soil and not processed in any form. Over 100 years agopeople ate whole unprocessed foods. The soil was alive providing foodsrich in vitamins and essential minerals. The Creator designed food tomaintain and run our bodies effectively. A good example of howmaintenance should occur is by using your automobile as an example. Toeffectively run your automobile you would give it the correct fuel toensure its performance. You would make sure that it had the correct gasand oil. You would not put in sugar or anything else that would clogthe engine and cause it to eventually break down. Yet, every day westart our bodies' engine without proper fuel and expect it to functionto its highest capabilities.
There is no doubt that American foodtechnology is largely responsible for a mass diet insufficient inoptimum whole food. Due to economics and distribution the food industryhas processed the natural nutrients out of foods. Even food grown insoil is chemically treated. Since the 19th century the technology ofcanning and milling foods has led to processed foods making up thegreater portion of the American diet.
In 1940 processed foodsrepresented only 10% of the American diet. By 1970 it consisted of 50%of the American diet. By the year 2000 processed foods represent over75% of the American diet. Due to reasons of budget and convenienceAmericans choose processed chemically altered foods. Unfortunately thisresults in dietary shortages and disease. Leading to very expensivemedical and hospital bills. Third world countries have less heartdisease and cancer then the United States due to less consumption ofprocessed chemically altered foods, they consume more whole foods.
